THAILAND TRAVEL NEWS: The Marriot International owned Renaissance Hotels & Resorts brand has opened its second Thailand property, the Renaissance Bangkok Ratchaprasong, in the heart of Bangkok’s upscale shopping precinct on Ploenchit Road.
Comprising 22 floors housing 275 rooms and 58 suites, all featuring marble tiled entrances, white oak floors, blond Tanganyika wood furniture, oversized windows, and glass enclosed bathrooms, the hotel will be operated under a management agreement with local Thai firm Maneeya Realty Company.
Room sizes range from 37sq.m (398sq.ft) up to 150dsq.m (1614sq.ft) for the club level, presidential suites, with all rooms feature separate baths and showers, in-room safes, iPod docks, and cable TV, as well as wireless hi-speed internet access.
The landmark Bangkok building features an Italian restaurant where the signature dishes evolve around woodfired oven dishes, a Chinese restaurant where the focus is on roasted duck and northern Chinese cuisine, two international restaurants, and a top-floor pub where the spectacular views compliment the wide selection of Champagne, wines, and classic cocktails on offer, as well as the extensive tapas menu.
Situated just 100m (328ft) from the Ploenchit BTS Skytrain, the Renaissance Bangkok Ratchaprasong is well situated for meetings and conventions and boasts 11 meeting rooms complete with a large landscaped terrace that allows attendees to step out into the open air during breaks, while the 640sq.m (6,889sq.ft) ballroom features the latest in lighting and sound equipment and is capable of seating about 800 people.
Renaissance Bangkok Ratchaprasong general manager Stefan Gruber said guests familiar with the Renaissance brand will find the new hotel lives up to, if not exceeds, their experience at other Renaissance properties.
“From the moment guests enter the hotel from Ploenchit Road and proceed along the 200 meter (656ft) landscaped driveway with its unique water features and foliage the mood is set for an unforgettable Bangkok stay”, he said.

Yesterday I walk up to the lobby entrance of the Renaissance Hotel in Bangkok with my wife and see a large group of young people eagerly awaiting the arrival of a famous person. Upon entering I am greeted at the door by Mr. Stefan Gruber (the GM) and I ask him, “Oh, who’s coming?”. He replies nonchalantly, “A couple.” I find that answer unbecoming of a hotel’s GM and lacking the politeness to a hotels’ patrons. He could have simply and without giving away his guests’ identity said, “a Korean pop star.” Obviously due to the fans out front it was public knowledge as to the identity of the star.
