Heavy Rain Storms Hit South Thailand

The South of Thailand is encountering a crisis of flash flooding; many areas have been hit and other provinces are bracing for more rain.

The Meteorological department has warned southerners to prepare for further heavy rain storms that could cause flash floods and mudslides; since Saturday many provinces have suffered damage. People are enduring the torrential rainstorm that has blown off roofs and left households with no electricity or water.

Khao Sok National Park was closed by park officials while Phang Nga province was the area most affected by the storm.

On Monday a passenger ferry operating between Phuket – Phi Phi Island was also caught in strong seas. Based on the investigation, the ferry named Khacha Marine was turning back to Phuket after dropping passengers at Phi Phi Island when it was hit by large wave and sank. The Captain and 4 crew were able to climb into life rafts and were picked up safely.

In the same day on Takua Pa – Surathani Road near by Khao Sok area, there were mudslides along steep portions of the road making the road inaccessible to vehicles. The Phang Nga police said that the mudslides occurred due to the continuing rain that destabilized the soil and they expect the slides will continue.

Navy soldiers have been sent to provide relief and help villagers suffering from flood damages. The Meteorology department warns people to stand by for more flash flooding and to temporarily cancel going out sea.
