THAILAND TRAVEL NEWS: Increased security measures at Bangkok Suvarnabhumi International airport have seen a dramatic drop in the number of thefts from passengers’ luggage, as well as the number of illegal taxis and unlicensed “tour guides” operating there.
A seminar held by airport authorities with ground services representative from Thai Airways International, Bangkok Airways, Thai Airports Ground Services Co., and Bangkok Flight Services Co. was told that a special unit working with district police at the Racha Thewa station inside the airport had been established to take direct responsibility for reducing airport crime.
The seminar was told that authorities were now monitoring personnel movement much more closely, were physically checking luggage handlers, as well as enforcing a ban on clothing with pockets and baggage handles carrying mobile phones while working.
Despite all of these measure Itthipol Boon-aree, head of security at Suvarnabhumi, said eradicating the problems entirely will be difficult in the absence of a dedicated airport police force, as “these people [constantly] come up with new tricks.”
The seminar discussed ways the various companies could join forces in reducing the risk of passenger baggage theft even more, with a number of initiatives put forward.
In the meantime, as with any other air destination in the world, passengers are advised to not place valuable items in their checked luggage and to also invest in a suitcase padlock.
