Thailand Sunflower Fields – Welcoming Winter at Lopburi |

Lopburi, the central province of Thailand is a popular sightseeing destination during Thai winter time (cool season). About 150 km north of Thailand, Lopburi is well known in Thailand for its thousands of acres of sunflower plantations. Each year, the fields full of the bright yellow blooming sunflowers attract people from all over the country to take beautiful photos of the yellow blossoms set against the clear blue sky and green hills.
Sunflowers are a commercial crop in Lopburi. Originally, people grew sunflowers in front of their house for decoration. Later, farms began to grow the plants for producing seeds and oil. The sunflower’s seed can be eaten as a snack and the oil can be used for cooking and for a cosmetic component. Additionally, the sunflower’s pollens and nectars are a good food for the honeybees, which are often associated with the sunflower fields.
Most of the sunflower plantations are in the area of Muang, Phattananikhom, and Chaibadan districts. Before harvesting every year, the large sunflower fields have become an attraction for many tourists.
Many locals have learned to take advantage of this increased tourism activity by providing various visitor centers where, for a low 10-20 baht fee, visitors can stop and learn about sunflower production and get up close to the the fields and some of the best photo opportunities.
On the roadside, there are many food stalls selling sunflower products, Thai food, tropical fruits, wine, and souvenirs. After taking in the sights of the sunflower fields, visitors can drive to visit other attractions such as the Lopburi Museum, Pasak Jolasit Dam, Phra Prang Sam Yod temple, and other lovely sights in and around Lopburi city.
The best time to visit sunflower fields is in the morning because it is not too hot. Don’t forget to bring your hat, sun-glasses, and umbrella to protect you from sunburn.
Sunflower field sightseeing is recommended between November to January, when the fields are in full blossom.
Though traveling by public buses from Morchit station or taking train from Hua Lampong would add more fun to the trip, the journey is best done with your own car due to the flood situation at the moment.
