Thailand’s biggest Polo match (and I mean big… as in elephant sized!), the 2010 King’s Cup Polo Elephant Tournament, will be held during 22-28 March at Anantara Golden Triangle Resort in Chiang Rai, the northernmost province of Thailand.
The tournament will kick off in the morning when the elephants will be blessed with holy water and this will be followed by a parade of traditional dancers donned in northern costumes, hill tribe villagers and traditionally-adorned pachyderms. The opening ceremony of the weeklong Elephant Polo Tournament will be held on the banks of the Ruak River which is the natural border of Thailand and Myanmar (Burma).
Since 2001, the tournament has grown from a small match of six teams to a much larger event this year with up to 12 teams from four continents. The Elephant Polo Tournament has raised over $200,000 for the National Elephant Institute in order to support the well-being of the endangered elephant – the animal that is a symbol of Thailand.
The King’s Cup Elephant Polo Tournament has been certified by the Tourism Authority of Thailand and billed as one of the pemier annual special events in Thailand. With no admission fee, visitors are welcome to Anantara Resort Golden Triangle, which is located 60km north of Chiang Rai International Airport.
