Loi Krathong Festival 2009, Chiang Mai, Thailand. Loi Krathong is traditionally held on the full moon night of the twelfth lunar month, which usually falls on some day in November.  In 2009, the Loi Krathong full moon falls on November 02, however many festivities will happen beginning October 31 (Saturday) to take advantage of the weekend.

Whether the festival takes place in a busy big city or an idyllic countryside, Loi Krathong offers incomparable enchantment to those who join the event.  Chiang Mai though is probably the ‘capital’ of Loi Kratong festival and here you will be able to take part in a fabulous Loi Krathong celebration that will take your breath away.

The floating of a Krathong and a banana leaf cup is intended to float away ill fortune as well as to express apologies to Khongkha or Ganga, the River Goddess. Some believe that the ritual is meant to worship the Buddha’s footprint on the bank of the Narmada River, while others say that it is to pay respect to Phra Uppakhut, one of the Lord Buddha’s great disciples.

The Loi Krathong Festival is celebrated nationwide in Thailand, especially where there are rivers, canals, lakes, seaside or other sources of water. In Chiang Mai the main attraction is the Ping River (Mae Nam Ping) where, each night, you will find 10’s of thousands of locals and visitors making the journey to take part in one of the most warm and wonderful (and often romantic) celebrations of the entire year.

In 2009, Chiang Mai will celebrate the Loi Krathong festival during October 31 to November 03. The event will feature entertainment at various venues throughout the city, bamboo raft races and boat races on the Mae Ping River, Yipeng lantern procession and contest, Beauty contest, and Krathong contests. Everyday when night falls, visitors will also enjoy fireworks, the release of Lanna-style floating lanterns, and Lanna Thai cultural performances.  Come and enjoy the absolute magic of Loi Kratong in Chiang Mai where the river and the skies will be filled with light each night of this special celebration.
