Chiang Mai and San Kampaeng district welcomes you to the 27th annual Borsang Umbrella and San Kampaeng Handicraft Festival 2010. This unique local festivity will be held during January 15 – 17 within the Borsang (or Bo Sang) Handicraft Village and along the street of San Kampaeng road, offering a great chance to shop for local handicrafts including the trademark paper umbrellas.

Borsang Umbrella and San Kampaeng Handicraft Festival features a vibrant atmosphere where colorful lanterns and hundreds of handmade umbrellas adorn the streets. Visitors will also enjoy live music while strolling along the roads and browsing through souvenir shops and local art exhibitions. Be sure you don’t miss a chance to try local Thai food from ‘Food Festival’ area before taking a seat for the beauty contest and handicraft skills competition.

Located about 10 minutes east of the Chiang Mai Superhighway Road in the San Kampaeng district, Borsang was once a typical rural village where people relied on seasonal agricultural work. With the introduction of umbrella manufacturing using Saa paper (a paper made from bark of the mulberry tree) combined with dedication and inherent arts & crafts skills, the village has since been associated with umbrella manufacture and the Borsang umbrella is now one of the best selling souvenirs of Northern Thailand.

Borsang paper-made umbrellas feature assorted designs and colors. Besides Saa paper, the umbrellas are also made with silk and cotton and are adorned by hand-painted northern Thailand images such as scenery, flowers and birds. To widen export markets internationally, they are produced in a variety of sizes ranging from giant parasol for sun shade to the tiny umbrellas used for cocktail drink adornment.

Borsang Handicrafts Center is one of the most well-known handicrafts hubs in Thailand and accessible to visitors throughout the year for a variety of handicraft industry tours and of course shopping. There are few Chiang Mai events that can compare to the vibrant and festive spirit of the village during this three-day festival, where you can take pleasure in the atmosphere and bask in the charm of northern Lanna Thai Hospitality.
