Tips for Backpacking in Thailand

From the famously cheap shopping in Bangkok to the affordable paradise of the idyllic southern islands, Thailand is a backpacker’s dream. Now the most popular destination for travelers in Southeast Asia, there’s so much to see and do that it can be hard to know where to begin planning a trip – so here’s an introduction to backpacking in Thailand for those traveling on a low budget!

Entry and Visas

Nearly all backpackers are eligible to stay in Thailand for up to thirty days without a visa and should have no problems entering the country either by air or road across the borders. Travelers hoping to stay longer can apply in advance for a sixty day tourist visa from external embassies. It costs about 1,000 baht and allows for multiple re-entries, which is handy for backpackers visiting other parts of Southeast Asia before returning to Thailand.

Getting Around

Thailand has a decent public transport network that is both efficient and inexpensive, making it one of the easiest countries to get around in Southeast Asia. The rot thammadaa are state-run buses that cover short distances, though they can be slow as they stop frequently. Comparatively, the rot air are fast and comfortable (the name refers to the air-conditioning on board) but, as you’d expect, they cost more. Alternatively, there are private services (rot tua) on the longer routes popular with backpackers, although travelers should be aware that some of these tour companies have a poor reputation for safety so it’s best to do a bit of research before booking a ticket. There is also a basic railway network which is good for long distance, with the fares priced according to class, facilities and speed of the train. Advanced bookings are always advised, especially for long journeys and sleeper cars.

Accommodation

Thanks to its enduring popularity with travelers, Thailand is packed with budget accommodation geared towards the backpacking scene. Although there aren’t that many traditional hostels in Thailand, the numerous guesthouses with simple rooms, shared bathrooms and sociable communal areas provide a very good alternative throughout the country. Hostels in Bangkok mostly take the form of guesthouses, although there are also mid-range hotel-style establishments with TVs and air-con that can be good value for money. With tuk-tuks (a traditional Thai vehicle) and motorcycle taxis providing inexpensive (if hairy at times) transport around the city center, it’s possible to reach the sights from most areas. However, backpackers making only a quick stop in this big, chaotic city might want to check the location of the attractions they wish to see in relation to the Bangkok hostels map. Budget accommodation is also plentiful outside the capital, from the northern mountains to the islands. Hostels in the beach resorts are often known as ‘bungalows’ as the rooms are set up as little individual huts and also provide a good, cheap place to stay for backpackers.

Eating and Drinking

In general, Thai food is both nutritious and affordable so travelers on a budget should have no trouble finding a suitable restaurant across the country. The cheapest meals are available at street stalls and roadside cafés, where a main course can cost as little as 60 baht. Thai food has become increasingly popular in Western countries, so backpackers will probably know what to expect from the local cuisine when they arrive. However, some ‘delicacies’ such as seahorses and goat testicles are probably best reserved for the more adventurous to sample! Many such things can be found at the talaat yen (night markets) around Thailand, where small kitchens gather every evening between 6pm and 6am. When it comes to drinking, Thailand does not have a Western bar culture and alcohol is traditionally consumed only with a meal. Nonetheless, backpackers will find there are now many places catering to their trade in the more developed and popular areas.

Building Clay House with Panya Project

This article was submitted to us by Ross Green (Trvlbum)

In Northern Thailand, two hours north of Chiang Mai there is an ambitious project underway to study sustainable living principles and practices. The Panya project, brainchild of American Christian Shearer and a close group of family and friends, is gaining notoriety as a truly unique social experiment to find earth friendly solutions to some of the fundamental issues facing our society. To learn more or to become involved please check out the Panya Project website at www.panyaproject.org.

While a growing number of people are becoming increasingly aware of some of the global issues we all face, there is a small group of people in Northern Thailand who have taken it upon themselves to do something about it. Global warming, thoughtless waste, energy crises, and food shortages are the types of issues that are being tackled by the people of the Panya Project; a group of motivated individuals who are making a conscious choice to seek change by setting an example.

Fortunately for me, they are also looking to meet and work with like-minded individuals in their ongoing quest to explore the practical realities of a sustainable lifestyle. This is what drew me to the Panya Project and gave me the opportunity to take the 2 hour journey north of Chiang Mai to the eco-village project and then continue on with the exciting journey as a Panya student and volunteer.

The Panya Project is an eco-village literally in the making. I had found it through the global eco-village network (http://gen.ecovillage.org) when I was researching how I might get out of the city and experience a lifestyle change. The project offers certified permaculture design courses, natural building work shops, and lots of great experience and opportunities should you find your mind wandering in that direction.

When I arrived, a natural building project was well underway and I was directed to the mud pit to help make mud bricks for a two-story house that was already six feet off the ground. There was no room in the dormitory or any of the huts so Christian (the motivating force of Panya) lent me a tent and I pitched it under a tree for the week I was there. Fittingly, the mud pit is where everyone starts. As the foul smelling goo massaged the areas between my toes, my mind wandered to thoughts of people in Italy crushing grapes to make wine with their feet.

Observing the Field-Panya Project

First we would dig up the clay, then mix water with rice husks and dance or walk it into a nice thick consistency. You put this into the brick molds and then let them dry in the sun. Within a few days I was out of the pit and had graduated into my first carpentry job, laying the second floor with recycled teak planks. This really is about learning from the ground up and people with NO experience (me) are soon trying to straighten bent nails they’ve hammered and learn how seal walls with earth and straw. This was all a part of my week long course in Permaculture Design.

To understand what permaculture is, here is part of the opening paragraph from Wikipedia: “Permaculture design principles extend from the position that “The only ethical decision is to take responsibility for our own existence and that of our children” (Mollison, 1990). The intent is that by rapidly training individuals in a core set of design principles, those individuals could design their own environments and build increasingly self-sufficient human settlements — ones that reduce reliance on industrial systems of production and distribution that Mollison identified as fundamental to systematically destroying the Earth’s ecosystems.”

Panya is also about close-knit community living with good food, a healthy lifestyle and family sentiment. A training ground for learning some fundamental concepts that will allow you to go out and spread the word about sustainable living.

The people running Panya are open-minded and easy to be around. It may sound corny (organic corn of course) but I could actually feel the love in the village. Things weren’t exactly serene and yogic while we were unloading a huge truckload of steaming hot elephant poop for the garden, but there was a sense of togetherness and fun about it that is rare to find in a Western work environment.

Take Turns in Cooking at Panya Project

Everyone takes turns cooking, cleaning and doing chores. The food was great. Fresh organic fruit in the morning and brown rice and veggie stir-fries were common. There’s no fridge so forget the dairy and meat unless someone makes a run into the market or nearby store.

The workday was very casual. Long lunches included hammock time or heading up to the café on the top the hill at the neighboring property for smoothies or coffee. The view from ‘You Sabai’ café is just as delicious as the drinks.

Solar showers at the end of the day were a treat in the beautifully designed men’s and women’s washing areas.

At night we talked. Can you believe it? We sat around and told stories, shared ideas about life, played music and laughed.

Panya has one electrical line that can hold around 10 amps so there is power for the antiquated laptop (they have internet) and some light bulbs. One night a sheet got thrown up and a projector appeared. Movie night! One day I ran some additional lighting so we could play darts at night in the newly designed ‘hammock cum dart’ space. The library is one of the highlights of the common area. You could spend an entire summer reading everything you would ever need to know about building earth friendly environments, as well as a lot of other interesting titles.

I have recently been to the website and it looks like things are gearing up for another great year.

Please note that this is a place where you come and get involved for a real project. Panya Project is not an ‘eco-tourism’ affair. Those are popping up everywhere it seems as businessmen realize ‘ECO’ is hot talk at the moment and they can sell more tours by attaching that word to a ‘green’ brochure. They are very busy here in high season keeping this place growing and don’t have time for touristy day tours. That said if you contact them a visit might be arranged if your intentions are well placed. You’ll understand more when you visit the site. Thank you everyone at Panya and I hope to make it back soon to continue learning, sharing, and working to earn my Permaculture Certificate.

To learn more about Panya please check their website (www.panyaproject.org) for the latest program information and a comprehensive description of what’s going on up in Northern Thailand.

Each Valentine’s Day since 1996 the world renowned Trang Underwater Wedding Ceremony has become one of Thailand’s most unusual annual events. The 2009 event promises to be more popular than ever and is expected to eclipse the existing Guinness Book World Record for underwater weddings, already held for the same event in 2000.

The 2009 undersea ceremony, held from February 13-15, also promises to add a new twist as same-sex couples are also being welcomed to take part. Gay and lesbian couples will not however be receiving an official marriage certificate since same-sex marriage is still not allowed under Thai law.

Trang, famous as a tropical honeymoon destination, is located about 300 kilometers south of the more heavily touristed Phuket Island. Trang is best known for its laid-back lifestyle, white beaches, clear seas, and the pristine Adaman Islands.

The coming event will take place over 3 days and will include welcoming festivities and a mainland parade before participants head over to Pak Meng beach for the wedding ceremonies. Underwater participants will be required to have diver certification but there is also a beachside ceremony offered to those who are less aquatically inclined.

Thailand Underwater Wedding 2009

The ceremony will include lavishly decorated long-tailed boats in an adaptation of the colorful Thai Traditional wedding parade (called Khan Maak procession). Couples will dive to about 15 meters and on the white sand bottom they will meet a district official who will witness and approve their marriage certificate and certificates of love.

All prospective newly-weds and those who want to renew their marriage vow are invited to contact Trang Chamber of Commerce for an application and registration information.

Date: February 13-15, 2009

December 3, 2008 - Bangkok Airport Reopens

The week-long PAD occupation of Suvarnbhumi International Airport was officially over after Thailand’s Prime Minister, Somchai Wongsawat, was removed from his premiership yesterday while the Airport operation will be back to full capacity this Friday, reported the Nation.

Although the seizure of Thailand’s main airports has caused incalculable damage to Thailand’s tourism and economy and stranded over 300,000 flight travelers, PAD claimed their ‘Final Battle’ triumph over the Prime Minister after he was found guilty for electoral fraud and banned from public politics for five years by Thailand’s Constitutional Court that also dissolved three biggest parties with the same charge on Tuesday.

PAD protesters celebrated their 'victory'

Airport authorities are now rushing to reopen the facility starting yesterday. Serirat Pasutanond, acting president of Airports of Thailand (AOT), said earlier that Suvarnabhumi Airport would be officially reopened for passengers on December 15. Since the PAD has begun to vacate the facility it is now just a matter of assessing the disruption that has resulted from the closure. Speculation is that air travel will resume as early as tomorrow, December 4.

The anti-government protesters celebrated the ruling of the Court in the departure area in the Aitport after the Prime Minister, who they claimed to be a puppet directed by the ousted Thaksin, was banned.

“I’m extremely happy that we have won over tyranny, over the Thaksin regime, which is corrupt and dictatorial,” said Dr. Chokchuang Chutinaton, one of the protesters.

The Joint Standing Committee on Commerce, Industry and Banking said that the government had no longer been able to manage the country and believed that other parties should be allowed to form the new government. It also asked the PAD protesters to leave the airport and stop all outlawed demonstrations.

MP Suchart Laibnamngern said that he expected the House session to elect the new prime minister will take place early next week. Until the new prime minister is to be elected, Deputy Prime Minister Chawarat Chanweerakun is acting as interim prime minister.

After the coup and three different governments; two of which were ostracized by PAD and one of which was a military government, Thailand has suffered economic crisis. The closure of the two airports has plunged the country into the worst financial situation in a decade. The travel and tourism industry, the country’s main economic sector, has been completely crippled and there are signs of severe economic downturn.

Is it safe to travel to Thailand?

Yesterday I wrote about the absurdity of forcing a political agenda by closing off the Bangkok International Airport as a form of public demonstration (view article). I predicted a terrible backlash will affect Thailand tourism in the short-term (beginning with International Travel Safety Advisories) and harm Thailand’s reputation in the longer-term. While writing the article I was simultaneously receiving emails asking the same general question… Is it safe to travel to Thailand?

Three days ago I would have stood on a soapbox and let anyone listening know what a safe place Thailand is for visitors. I have traveled the world and there are few, if any, places where I have felt more safe from any act of violence. I feel safer in downtown Bangkok than I do in some areas of my hometown in Canada. Now I watch the news and I wonder… Is it safe to travel to Thailand?

The answer is… probably… if you avoid the mobs… but why take the risk, especially while the media is showering us with images of out-of-control Thai people? It is a sad sad day when I am of a mindset to dispense this kind of advice.

In the past 24 hours, we in the tourism industry are very quickly and unmercifully feeling the after effects of PAD’s actions that forced closure of Bangkok International Airport. My Chiang Mai-based travel company is reeling as we are now dealing with one cancellation after the other. In the past 24 hours we have had 60% of our December group tours cancel. People are worried about their safety and until the public ranting subsides and the dust settles I think decisions to avoid Thailand are justifiable.

It is not only foreigners who I am hearing from. For 2 days now it is impossible to hold a discussion where the topic of PAD’s (People’s Alliance for Democracy) actions is not mentioned. I have not yet encountered a single Thai person who will say they support the PAD demonstration. Many, many Thais are saying, “I used to support PAD but not anymore”. I am even hearing stories about people going home to change out of yellow shirts as a display of distaste for PAD (yellow is the color of PAD support) or simply out of fear that their respect for the King will be taken as support for PAD (yellow is also the King’s color and yellow shirts are often worn out of respect, especially on Mondays).

This is the reaction of the average Thai, people are overwhelmingly against the actions of PAD and I predict that the result will be political suicide. The blunder of this group of people in mobbing the Bangkok International Airport could not have been better orchestrated if the ruling People’s Power Party had written the script.

In the global arena it is obvious by the widespread International reports and travel advisories that there is consensus - the actions are deplorable. Even Thailand’s SE Asian neighbors are accusing Thailand of demonstrating a complete lack of political maturity. The media is picking up the most embarrassing moments that I have witnessed in my 5 years living in this country… and this has included a quiet military coupe, a tsunami, and a troubled southern Thailand. Governments are warning their citizens to avoid travel to Thailand and… well this whole thing is a complete dog’s breakfast.

Yet, I remain confident that the violence will cease and the event will blow over; I need to hope that the level of embarrassment and the political repercussion will prevent this from occurring again; and I am most confident that Thailand will very soon be again considered a safe place to travel and will regain its place as a favored travel destination.

I will close this article with a dose of reality… this is a quote excerpted from an email I received today from a Singapore client that was looking forward to a December dream vacation for her family. This is only a representation of many thousands more… It is a very sad time indeed …

“… the sad news is we will postpone our trip to Chiangmai this season due to the closure of Bangkok airport.

As we will be traveling to Chiangmai via Bangkok transit, the current situation appeared rather unfavorable to travel.

Airport in Bangkok is closed and protestors are everywhere.

It is really worrying to know that the protestor had taken control of Bangkok control tower.

The lastest news we heard from “Channel News Asia” was that a protestor in Chiang Mai was gunshot.

It really sounded rather unsafe to travel to Thailand during this period.

Singapore authorities discourage Singaporean to travel to Bangkok, and all Singapore flights to Bangkok have been cancelled. Similarly, I will proceed to cancel our flights to Bangkok and Chiangmai and re-plan another destination for our family for this December Holiday.”

Closure of Bangkok Airport

Chiang Mai, November 26, 2008 - The mob actions of Thailand’s PAD party that resulted in the temporary closure of the Bangkok International Airport is certain to harm an already struggling tourism industry - and surely very little can be gained politically.

I am a Canadian living in Thailand and operating an online marketing and travel services business. The latest PAD (People’s Alliance for Democracy) actions that have forced the closure of the Bangkok International Airport are deeply disturbing to me and undoubtedly any travel and tourism operator, Thai and foreigner alike, trying to survive despite this type of seemingly thoughtless, politically motivated action. The actions that resulted in disruption of service and the temporary closure of Thailand’s International Airport (for safety reasons) serves only to harm Thailand’s reputation, indirectly harm Thailand’s people, and is not an accurate reflection of all the things that make this country such an inviting destination for foreign visitors.

The Suvarnabhumi (pronounced Suwanaphoom) International Airport is the gateway into (and out of) the Kingdom of Thailand for the entire world; with approximately 85% of 14.5 million International visitors arriving into Thailand by air in 2007. Closing the airport to International travel cannot possibly further any ill-conceived political agenda. Not when media coverage reaches a world stage. Not in a country that is just entering the tourist season, relies deeply on tourism as an economic mainstay, and is 9 days away from the most important event of the entire year with the December 5 birthday celebrations for Thailand’s revered King Bhumibol.

I have talked with Thai friends of mine, average Thais who are not particularly politically motivated, and to them the actions of PAD to block the International Airport roadway and to stream en-mass into the airport to force the closure leaves them bewildered. Every single one of these people also fully understands the far reaching and devastating effect the actions are bound to have on the tourism industry.

The tourism industry, already rocked by the global financial crisis, is the main industry in many parts of this country and creates an economy that sustains millions of Thai people (most of them of voting age) who have no other means of support and already exist on very limited incomes. To do anything that can hurt this essential industry is just not logical by any definition and is certain to seriously harm the already dwindling support of the Peoples Alliance Party and diminish their efforts to topple a government accused of being run by power mongers.

To take a stance against a government by hurting the people and harming the reputation of this great country is something that I will try to understand but I seriously doubt I will see any sense of purpose. I am angry and confused… and the sense of confusion permeates everyday Thai life.

For people reading this and balancing a decision to travel to Thailand, I will say this about this latest reckless media stunt… The knee-jerk actions of a group of political activists should not be considered a representation of what this country and it’s people have to offer. The people of Thailand are kind and welcoming by their very nature and I trust that this event will quickly fade and the true nature of the Thai people will prevail and continue to win the hearts of millions of annual vacationers.

PAD Protesters at Bangkok Airport

Bangkok – Several thousands anti-government protesters, People’s Alliance for Democracy (PAD), blocked the entrance of the $US3 billion international Suvarnabhumi airport in Bangkok and ordered the officials to close the airport at 9.00 pm last night, reported The Nation.

The actions left up to 10,000 passengers stranded inside the facility. More than 21 out-bound flights to Japan, India, Iran, Europe and many others were canceled with over 6000 travelers being affected.

The closure was issued by AOT chief Serirat Prasutanout after many PAD protesters, most wearing yellow shirts as a symbol, ran amok through the airport including some passenger areas. The airport chief said that he was concerned about the safety of passengers and airport officials.

The protesters rally creates a blockade barring access to the airport, while the airport will remain closed until further notice. The airport officials are working hard to evacuate stranded passengers and carry on the flight operation.

Foreigner Passengers led out by Police

“We are trying to negotiate them to allow outgoing passengers stranded by the protest to fly”, said Serirat. Incoming flights are also being already diverted to other airports in Thailand, say Don Muang, Chiang Mai and Phuket.

The PAD’s attempt to seal off the airport set forth on Tuesday when the protesters completely blocked the roads to Suvarnabhumi airport to pressure the Prime Minister, who was due to fly to Thailand from APEC conference in Peru, to quit.

Riot police refused to scuffle with the PAD surge lest severe casualties like the earlier clash which left two people dead and almost 500 injured.

Somchai, the Prime Minister of Thailand, has rejected to step down and will land in Thailand at an undisclosed location on Wednesday evening.

City bike tour in Thailand

Feeling the rush of fresh breeze touching the skin and enjoying the sights and sounds of the unrolling countryside is what many biking enthusiasts long for. Well recognized by the biking community as a destination that offers some of the finest biking adventures available, Thailand has a wide variety of biking terrain including trips in the mountainous northern region, the flatter and very scenic central regions and the very beautiful southern region with its many islands and resort areas.

In Thailand, there are many bike tour operators that offer you an excellent option for an organized cycling trip. If you are into the rugged cycling there are also many tours and trips available for the off-road mountain biking enthusiast.

When planning a trip it is usually best to get some advice from a local company or from someone that has experienced the roads. On reason for this is that some areas may be prone to lots of traffic, particularly in the south where there are fewer options for travelling from point to point and higher traffic density. That said, most roads do offer an ample shoulder for small motorcycles and bicycles so, generally, even the more busy roads are not dangerous.

Thailand off-road bike tour

When cycling through Thailand what you will notice everywhere you go is that the people are friendly and will try to be helpful. Many people will know a few words of English, especially at the tourist attractions. The sites are fantastic the food is delicious, and travel can be very cost conservative especially if camping.
Nearly all of the National Parks provide camping facilities that are included with the price of admission. The admission charges are relatively high though (400 baht per person) and it is just as likely that a hotel can be found for similar cost… or cheaper.

Cycling during the rainy season – roughly May to November but varied for the different regions – may make camping difficult and time should be budgeted for drying out clothing items to avoid mildew problems. The weather is usually best suited to cycling from November to March when the temperatures are more mild and there is little rain.

If you are looking for a bike tours that will provide you with a terrific natural get-away and a fantastic cultural experience then Thailand should not be missed.

Ang Thong Marine National Park Archipelago

It is a wonderful day, the day after our journey to Ratchaprapa Dam. We have come back to the same old bus station at Surat Thani and this time we have another escape planned with a relaxing weekend on the gulf islands and at Ang Thong Marine National Park, the splendid Gulf of Thailand archipelago located northeaset of Surat Thani.

To get to Ang Thong the bus first takes us due east along the Gulf of Thailand coastline for about 85 Kilometers, from Surat Thani city to Donsak. At Donsak we then board a ferry for the 60 kilometer journey to Samui Island, more commonly referred to as Koh Samui.

As soon as we get to the island our bags are all carried to our guesthouse while we hurry to catch yet another boat; this time a taxi-boat destined for Ang Thong archipelago.

View from the top of Wua Talap Island

We enjoy yet another nice day with scenery of vast calm sea and green dots of islands all along the 35-kilometer boat ride. Then a small pier looms closer and we know we are arriving at Wua Talab Island in the Ang Thong archipelago.

On the island we have a chance to regain our land legs when we embark on a 500-meter trekking trail up a steep hillside slope and to a view point situated above the marine park headquarters. The view point offers us a picturesque panorama of the entire archipelago spread out over the blue sea and to the horizon.

Walking back to the headquarters office is much easier. We changed our clothes and joined others on the white sand beach and playing in the warm ocean, all before lunch time.

Thale Nai: Emerald lagoon

After a pause for meal, we were getting ready to take off for another “must visit” site called Thale (pronounced Talay) Nai on Mae Ko Island.

We make our way along another steep but not too strenuous hike and are well rewarded by Thale Nai, a natural lagoon hidden among limestone cliffs famous for its calm emerald saltwater lake and the underground tunnels connected to the outer sea.

Another highlight for this trip is a kayaking voyage to the opposite Island called Koh Sam Sao. We can even see colorful coral laying under the clear water and a natural stone bridge curving out to the sea while kayaking to the awaiting white and pristine beach.

Stop for kayaking

Again time does fly on this day; here comes our guide’s voice calling to gather all visitors back to main land. We gradually get on the boat heading back to Samui Island and before sunset we leave Ang Thong archipelago with peace and with the pulsing of the waves.

Chiang Mai is shopping paradise for most travelers because of its unequaled abundance of handicrafts and quaint local goods sold at very affordable prices. Open markets and shopping venues are scattered around the city and accessible throughout the day and into the night. The range of products for sale is vast and many visitors to Chiang Mai include an extra empty bag to their shopping list in order to haul the bounty home. Each of several famous markets has gained recognition and nationwide popularity as the best overall place for buying quality hand-made products at very reasonable prices. As Chiang Mai is a well established tourist destination, finding accommodations and getting around the city are not something to worry about.

Chiang Mai is recognized as one of the handicrafts centers of Asia because it has a very large system of street markets and local markets that are very easily accessible. The markets trace down many blocks along bustling streets and that sometimes seem to have no end. The limiting factor in how much market you will be able to cover may often depend on how far you want to go before your feet tire out. The products are available in a vast variety including a wide range of wood work, silk products, silver art and jewelry, clothing, ceramics, interior decor, antiques, Buddhist art, lacquer work, and the list goes on…

Chiang Mai Night Bazaar is the most well known night market in Thailand, taking up about 10 square blocks centered on Chang Klan road in central Chiang Mai. It is easy to spend a whole night just strolling past hundreds of street-side stalls and indoor arcades. The Night Bazaar is a great place to shop for exotic and beautiful handcrafted goods created by local artisans and skilled crafts-persons from the surrounding villages. The quality is generally high and some very good values can by found, especially if you are skilled at bartering a good deal.

Chiang Mai Walking Street can be a very nice alternative to the more hectic Night Bazaar and prices are aimed more at the locals so prices are generally low; so much that often there is no room to negotiate a bargain. The Walking Street Market is open only on Sundays and is a definite must see because the atmosphere is very relaxed, the market street is quite beautiful and this is an excellent place to mingle with the wonderful Thai people and to find fantastic bargains. The entire Walking Street is about 1 kilometer long and runs the entire length of Ratchadamneurn Road beginning at Thapae Gate and ending at Wat Prasing. Apart from a wide range of hand-made products on offer, one can also enjoy many Thai food stalls, street performances of a traditional nature, and also some much need massage and foot massage.

More serious shoppers can go directly to the villages and factories that manufacture handicrafts and other products and offer for wholesale at San Kamphaeng. Borsang village, just before San Kamphaeng, also has many shops offering a range of handicrafts and is renowned for its unique Bo Sang umbrellas. Baan Tawai just south of Chiang Mai is home to a wide range of wood carving, wood décor, and other handicrafts.

Chiang Mai is also popular for the diverse ethnic arts that you can find many hill tribe shops across the city. One recommended hill tribe shop is the Hill Tribe Products Promotion Center on Suthep Road next to Suan Dok Temple. It was established by His Majesty the King to promote the products created by 6 different tribes in Chiang Mai including Akha, Karen, Yao, Hmong, Lisu, and Lahu. This is aimed at generating alternative income to replace a reliance on opium cultivation in the past. Shop here for unique ethnic goods and help the hill tribe people.

Those who are interested in modern shops of the much more commercial variety, there are two big shopping centers: Kad Suan Kaew Plaza and Central Airport Plaza. The latter is relatively new and less than 5 minutes from the Chiang Mai International Airport. Panthip Plaza on the same road as Night Bazaar is ideal for techy people who are looking for computers and electronic gadgets with many discounts and a wide range of technical product available at good prices.

Chiang Mai offers more than shopping venues. It is a friendly and beautiful city with rich history steeped in Thai Lanna culture. Hundreds of temples and historical sites are found everywhere across the city and it is very easy to head out of the city to some spectacular natural areas. When not shopping, a visitor can enjoy waterfalls, elephant shows, and trekking tours. Some may be attracted by the more adventurous activities such as white water rafting, bungee jumping and paintball battle. Whatever you could ask for in a trip, Chiang Mai can offer… plus a whole lot more.

Sustainable agricultural and organic farming is an alternative way to live life, preserve a culture, and protect nature in Northern Thailand.

Ek-ii-aek-aekkk…the Thai language call of the roosters aroused me from my warm, comfortable mattress. I can glimpse the sun beams seeping through the walls and under the wooden door. I can sense chilly, white fog of the Thailand winter while walking downstairs to help my host mother prepare vegetables to sell at market.

“You seem sleepy. Why don’t you go back to your bed and sleep longer?”
Mae Ratri asked gently. Mae in this instance means ‘mother’ and is the way to address ones host mother; for about 2 weeks I was very blessed to have Mae Ratri Kruengngern’s as my surrogate mother.

Mae Ratri and her family are a rural farming family in Mae Tha, an idyllic green village in Northern Thailand. I was part of a group of university students studying sustainable agriculture and as inviting as the offer of extra sleep sounded, I was much more excited to continue with another day of learning.

Mae Tha is a small community of Mae-On sub-district in Chiang Mai, located amidst the mountains on the boundary of Lamphun province. Most of the population speaks the “Yong” dialect or the Thai language.

Mae Tha villagers earn a living by farming rice and cultivating indigenous vegetables using organic and sustainable practices.

Mr. Phat or Por Phat, dressed in his pale blue cotton shirt, traditional style pants and wearing flip-flops, is a leader of the village who firstly introduced organic farming and sustainable way of living to people in Mae Tha.

The transition process to change the farms in Mae Tha from chemical to organic ran effectively since there was a good cooperation from villagers in the community.

“I dare say it is because our families have a long and dear relationship. Our past generations live here. We are all related and that support is the community’s strength” Por Phat said proudly.

Most mornings people will venture out to their own farms but if there is a time of harvesting they will willingly go to help others from farm to farm.

The most impressive thing about farming and living in Mae Tha is learning how to give and receive. You will always get assistance whenever you need and the state of giving perpetuates when you feel that you could help others. That is the beautiful and endless circle of support that people in Mae Tha adopted from their ancestors and pass on through the generations.

Fresh produce ready for sell at Chiang Mai’s JJ Market

Every Wednesday and Sunday Mae Ratri and a group of villagers will wake up around 2-3 am to prepare all the green, fresh, and chemical-free vegetables to sell in the organic food spots in Chiang Mai - JJ market and Nhong Hoi market.

The organic food selling areas are established by Institute for Sustainable Agricultural Communities or ISAC, an organization that aims to build and support sustainable agriculture communities in Chiang Mai.

The sun shines more brightly as it is time for a big truck to come and pick up both the produce and the sellers for the trip to the market.

Mr. Weerapon Thamkhun, one of the ISAC’s committee members said “giving high priority on home consumption is our first concern.” He added “the goal of Organic Market is to promote the products from natural processes with not using chemical fertilizers or pesticides, including processing and marketing.”

The number of organic food consumers is increasing due to the increasing attention to health concerns and agricultural sustainability.

The smiling faces of the people who come and buy organic vegetables at the market marks the appreciation of receiving healthy, safe foods and reasonable price. The increasing demand and appreciation for quality is the challenge that the organic and sustainable farming community readily accepts.

Mrs. Wannapa Tachai, a fan of organic food said “organic farming is the greatest idea for both consumers and farmers. We both have a clean and safe food for our health.”

Mae Ratri turned her face to Mrs. Wannapa and gave her a nod. “And it seems we, both farmers and consumers, are friends. They will pay a reasonable price for the good quality of fresh vegetables, while we can also provide them healthy food.”

Mae Ratri added that she felt like it is a kind of making merit. Since she and people in the village produce the safe organic food for consumers, not introducing potentially harmful chemicals.

The sunlight gets stronger and moves its position to the top of our head showing that it is time to have lunch and go back home. We all gathered around and had lunch together. Sharing food is a common thing to Mae Ratri and her friends because it shows the easy and close relationship of people in Mae Tha.

After the meal, the people were ready to go back home and prepare for working in their farms. We planted, plugged, watered, pulled weeds, and hand dug the soil. The work was exhausting but every single drop of sweat will in turn be reward when the vegetables are grown.

Healthy, chemical-free, and colorful produces from Mae Tha village

Since it is during winter time, broccoli, cauliflowers, and many kinds of winter green vegetables can be grown. So we grab a hoe and started plowing new plots for them.

The sun still shines brightly bringing hotness and humidity but the cool breeze helps ease the heat. So, we keep working the farm.

Time passed by, the sound of birds flying back to their nests was a sign that it was time to finish work.

We went back home and cleaned ourselves. I found that although working in the farm was tiring and made my two palms rough and bruised, it brought freshness and delight to me.

“I feel happy because I know that I have spent my sweat for growing healthy and safe foods for the goodness of my customers”, Mae Ratri’s words have repeated several times in my mind.

Organic farming is not only bringing her family safe food for healthy life, but also widens the view to perceive the rule of nature. The more they protect nature by farm with natural methods, the longer nature stays with them.

“We have only one chance to live our lives. Being healthy and to live happily in sufficiency are much more important than earning a sum of money and being wealthy by trickery and take-advantage doings”, Mae Ratri remarked.

I think these are strong words of wisdom learned from generations of people living close to the land and respecting strong community values.

Last month I proposed a crazy idea to my friends. I had been cooped up in Chiang Mai busy with work and I needed some adventure in my life. I had spent too much time in the city and I needed to get out. In short, a vacation would be just the right medicine to release my pent up
